FAQ Section - Animal Control Index

How can I create records on one computer and access them on another one when the computers are not networked?   top

First you need to install the Animal Control Index on the second non-networked system.  This is OK since you have a six user licence.

Next you need to decide which non-networked system will be the master for the purpose capturing and updating information because there is no way to co-ordinate data captured on two or more non-networked systems.

Next you will need to periodically transfer (copy) the data files from the master system to the second non-networked system.  The data files to copy are DOGINDEX.DBF, DOGINDEX.FPT AND DOGINDEX.CDX and are located in the WINACI folder.  When your files get too big to fit on a diskette, WINZIP is an excellent compression utility that can help.

For people that are purchasing tags for this year, I have been unable to easily access last years information by searching by the last name, I bring up the entire index with everyone’s name on it, look for their name to find out tag # for last year is this the only way to find them?  I was under the impression I could enter their name and access their information that way and then all I would have to do is change the tag number (after hitting the dog button to enter this years tag number).   top

Yes you can find by name. Once the record is located then you would click on the Renew Licence icon ( the brown doggy). If the find by name is not working properly then it means you need to run the clean up and organize routine to rebuild the index files. This is done from the Edit Mode Screen using the A to Z icon.

The key to successful searches is not to be too specific. For example to locate a licence issued to Larry Burling on Colonization Road, you would not use the full name and street because that is far too specific and is not required to find a unique data match. In this case the inputting of 'bur' is probably sufficient to find the record or at least come close to it. You would only use the additional street field if you were looking for example, Smith out of numerous records with Smith.

To repeat this Burling example, you would enter bur and press enter twice to search for the record.

I have been trying to use the custom search but am having difficulty figuring it out with the < >, <=, =>, $, etc… buttons. I’m sorry, but I’m lost!   top

The best way to learn about Custom Search is to look at and use the prebuild search examples. Start by opening the custom search window and click on the yellow question mark for information about the operators such as <> and $. Next click on the Red Note Pad icon to see the prebuilt examples.

Could you please provide me with directions on how to obtain statistics for the number of dog and cat licenses we issued in 2001? (Question received in the fall of 2003)   top

At this point in time the opportunity to generate summary information for a previous year has past. This is because licences issued in 2001 would typically be updated with current date and year information at the time of licence renewal. In other words, there is typically only one record per pet in the database, not one record per pet per year.

Your front counter cash entry financial control systems may be able to provide the data you are looking for.
